The 2004 New York City Marathon (118 photos)
NYC Marathon 2004 - 5 boroughs, 5 bridges, 37,257 runners, 2 million spectators.
Date captured: Sunday, November 7, 2004.
Just as I did last year in Chicago,
three years ago I followed the NYC Marathon in an attempt to provide as much photo coverage of the course as possible
using public transit.
I covered mile 2 to 26 through 4 boroughs via many train lines, lots of walking, some jogging, and a bus.
PRE-RACE - Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
The marathon commences across the New York Bay in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. The first mile-and-a-half of the course is over the
Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn.
MILE 2 - 4th Ave & 92 St
MILE 4 - 4th Ave & 59th St. The race is under way.

Sunset Park, Brooklyn
MILE 5 - 4th Ave & 36th St. The men's leaders approach.

#17 - Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa - won the men's race.

Park Slope, Brooklyn
MILE 6 - 4th Ave & 9th St

Boerum Hill / Fort Greene / Clinton Hill, Brooklyn
MILE 7 - 4th Ave & Pacific St
MILE 8 - Lafayette Ave

Williamsburg, Brooklyn
MILE 10 - Bedford Ave & S 6th St. Williamsburg Bridge in the background.
MILE 11 - Bedford Ave & N 7th St

Greenpoint, Brooklyn
MILE 12 - Manhattan Ave & Greenpoint Ave

Hunters Point - Queens
MILE 13 - The Pulaski Bridge on the Brooklyn/Queens border. The half-way point of the marathon.

The turn onto Jackson Ave.

Vernon Blvd

Long Island City - Queens
MILE 14 - Crescent St

Up the Queensboro Bridge.
MILE 16 - Off the Queensboro Bridge and into Manhattan.

Up First Avenue.
MILE 17 - First Ave & 86th St
MILE 19 - First Ave & 125th St

Over the Willis Ave bridge and into The Bronx.
MILE 20 - Willis Ave, The Bronx

E 135th St

North onto Alexander Ave.

E 138th St

Over the Madison Ave Bridge and back into Manhattan.
MILE 21 - turn south on Fifth Ave at 138th St

Harlem

Around Marcus Garvey Park.

Mt Morris Park W & W 120th St
MILE 22 - Fifth Ave
MILE 23 - Central Park
MILE 24 - Central Park Obelisk
MILE 25 - Central Park South

Back into the park at Columbus Circle for the final stretch to the Finish Line.
